Among many festivals held in different parts of the world, this one is perhaps the dirtiest. The Casmacorras festival is held in Granada, Spain.
Every year people of the two Spanish towns of Guadix and Baza celebrate an old legend of the middle ages. They cover themselves in oil and fight for a statue of the “Virgen de la Piedad” meaning “our Lady of Mercy”. As part of the tradition, a clown on his way from Guadix to Baza tries to take back the statue. Since the statue is considered sacred, people try to stop the clown by throwing paint and oil and forcing him out of town. In 2006, the festival was declared a «Fiesta of National Tourist Interest of Spain».
